Announced today (April 10), the news of the debut album arrives following the Liverpool quartet sharing their two acclaimed ‘punkadonk’ EPs, and having hit the road with huge names including Sam Fender, Yungblud and Bruce Springsteen.

Set for release on July 12, the project is described in a press release as “coming together like a coming-of-age narrative – a place that can help people navigate the tumultuous experiences of young adulthood”.

“If you’ve felt love but not always felt you deserved it; if you’ve been ambitious but also wracked with self-doubt; if you’ve been confident at times but crushed by anxiety at others: this is the album for you,” it adds.

“Just as importantly, if you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong, Stone offer a community that feels like a welcoming home-from-home.”

Comprised of Fin Power (vocals) – the son of both The La’s member and frontman of Cast, John Power – Elliot Gill (guitar), Sarah Surrage (bass) and Alex Smith (drums) – the four-piece recorded the album during sessions in Vermont with producer Rich Costey (Sam Fender, HAIM, Biffy Clyro).

During the sessions, they looked to capture snapshots of British youth culture, while also immersing themselves in the life and routines of the small town of Brattleboro.

“This album speaks for everyone’s experiences. It’s about community, passion, love, hate, singing, dancing: all of that comes into it. It speaks for all of our experiences, we want to show ourselves as well and only portray what is actually us,” said Power of the album. “I’m hoping people can relate to it and understand it, and maybe find their own stories through our songs.”

As well as announcing details of their upcoming debut LP today, Stone have also dropped the first teaser– sharing the new single ‘My Thoughts Go’.

Also arriving alongside a stunning visual accompaniment, the track takes a stripped-back yet powerful approach and sees the band deal with the themes of both anxiety and exhilaration when it comes to confessing your feelings for someone.

My head’s like a storm/ the night was crazier than thought/ I feel it under my skin/ mistakes will burden me again/ and if I confess my love to you, just know it’s cause I’m drunk,” the frontman sings at the start of the song, leading into its eruptive chorus.

To celebrate the upcoming release of the debut LP, Stone have announced a run of live in-store events at UK record stores during the week of album release. Back in 2021, Stone were featured as part of NME’s Radar, and described as being “bruising post-punk full of Scouse spirit and soul”.

Discussing their breakthrough 2020 single ‘Leave It Out’ at the time, Smith said: “It was an absolute eruption of energy and we carry that into the live show – we were desperate to get out and play.”

“I just need to get in front of those crowds – it’s all about the live performance for us,” continued Power. “Put me in a room with anyone and I will convert them all to fall in love with the band.”

The following year, the members dropped their debut EP ‘Punkadonk’, which was given a four-star review by NME’s Andy Brown and hailed as showing “the band explore their own identity while treading a path towards the big time”.

“Though ‘Punkadonk’ is just five tracks long, it never stays in one place long enough for the listener to get a complete handle on it,” it read. “Rather than follow safely in the footsteps of the northern stars they’ve been on the road with, Stone have used their first EP as an opportunity to build upon their own punchy identity – and, thanks to the electricity coursing through ‘Punkadonk’, that decision has paid off.”

As well as supporting huge names including Bruce Springsteen, Yungblud and Sam Fender, the Liverpool rockers have also been named by NME as one of the highlights of 2022’s Reading & Leeds festival, and locked in a slot at Louis Tomlinson’s Away From Home festival.
