The Republican candidate and former President of the United States made headlines once again over the weekend, when he took to his Truth Social account to share the brash update: “I hate Taylor Swift”.

It comes as Swift Swift broke her silence on the upcoming US elections last week (September 10), following the first debate between Kamala Harris and Trump. In an update shared with her 284million Instagram followers, she threw her support behind current Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee, as well as her vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz.

In the post, she championed Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader”, writing that she believes “we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos”. She signed off the post as Taylor Swift, “Childless Cat Lady”– a nod to a remark made by JD Vance, Trump’s candidate for vice president, in 2021.

Already, it has been reported that her backing of Harris caused a “500 per cent” increase in voter registration, with nearly half a million registrants being directed from Swift’s Instagram page. Shortly after, Walz made a nod to a track from Swift’s ‘Tortured Poet Department’ online, described himself as a “fellow cat owner” and started selling Swiftie-style friendship bracelets from the campaign merch store.

Now, following Trump’s brazen update about the singer, countless fans and famous faces have taken to social media to share their thoughts.

Flavor Flav for instance, took to X/Twitter after Trump’s post went viral, and shared a simple update that read “I LOVE TAYLOR SWIFT!!” He also responded to a follower who accused him of “pandering” to the singer’s fanbase, writing: “You must be new here,,, allow me to reintroduce myself,,, they call me KING SWIFTIE”.

Star Wars legend Mark Hamill also shared a similar stance, posting an update reading “#ILoveTaylorSwift”. He posted it as a reply to Swiftie who posted quotes from both Post Malone and Travis Kelce, alongside the caption “Real men praise Taylor Swift for her talent”.

Film and TV producer Franklin Leonard also reposted a screenshot of the Trump post, which had the caption: “Says the smallest man who ever lived,”  before sharing another post reading “Two Americas”.

Stephen King also shared an update in support of Swift, writing: “I love Taylor Swift. Her music makes me happy. End of story,” while Billy Baldwin also chimed in in favour of the ‘Shake It Off’ singer.

I am a 60 year-old retired building contractor. I don’t follow Taylor Swift or listen to her music. But I love Taylor Swift simply because her talent and her fame intimidates the hell out of every hateful, insecure, whiny obedient Trump servant on the planet.

The criticism from the former POTUS comes shortly after the Trump campaign controversially released a t-shirt designed very similarly to Taylor Swift‘s ‘Eras’ tour merch earlier this month. It features a grid of photos of the former president coloured like the infamous ‘Eras Tour’ shirt and retails for $36 (£27).

Any ambiguity about the inspiration for its design was removed when a tweet from the former president’s headquarters called on “all Swifties for Trump” to get their “Trump Era shirt today”. Fans are speculating she will sue, as they have done previously when he falsely claimed her endorsement with a series of AI-generated posts.

Following Swift’s post endorsing Harris, Stevie Nicks then followed suit in speaking out about the election.

Describing Swift as her “friend”, the former Fleetwood Mac singer said: “Now is the time to research and choose the candidate that speaks to you and your beliefs.” Though Nicks stopped short of explicitly endorsing a candidate or party in her post, she did sign off in the same manner as Swift, writing: “Love, Stevie Nicks, Childless Dog Lady.”

Other musicians who have thrown their support behind Kamala Harris so far have included Charli XCX, Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion, P!nk, Bon Iver, Quavo and more. The presidential election is set to be held on November 5.

On the eve of the 2020 election, Swift shared a video message in which she encouraged fans to vote, having already formally endorsed Joe Biden earlier in that campaign. Last year, she led record-breaking numbers of people to the Vote.org website after encouraging her fans to register to vote.

Though Swift has yet to directly address Trump this time around, she had previously commented on the Republican nominee. She slammed him in 2020, writing: “We will vote you out in November”, and then accused him of “gaslighting the American public” a year earlier.

Back in February, Trump responded to claims that Joe Biden was seeking endorsement from the pop star to swing the next election in a series of strange posts where he claimed he made Swift “so much money”, and was fond of her boyfriend – “even though he may be a Liberal, and probably can’t stand me!”
