My Morning Jacket offer a plea for unity on their new song, “Aren’t We One?,” which was co-written by the band’s Jim James and Bo Koster in tandem with Manchester Orchestra frontman Andy Hull. It was produced by Brendan O’Brien, who had not previously worked with My Morning Jacket.

“In these times of great confusion and shifting energies, let us remember love, equality, and unity,” James says. “Let us move past the divide-and-conquer mentality holding us back and come together to uplift one another and heal our planet. A rainbow is the greatest example we have of this in life, where all of the diverse colors come together to form something much greater than they ever could have done on their own. No matter what walk of life one may stroll- who doesn’t enjoy the majesty of a rainbow out in nature?! We are all part of that great ever-changing living rainbow called life.”

It’s the first fresh music from the band since the release of their 2021 self-titled album (ATO Records). James is also urging listeners to register to vote and while also confirming the band’s belief “in the leadership” of the Democratic presidential ticket of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, “who are working tirelessly to create a world of fairness, equality, and peace.”

The new song comes ahead of a Nugs.net livestream event with tourmates Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats over the next two nights (Sept. 18-19) from Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville. Proceeds will benefit HeadCount’s efforts to register voters ahead of the election.

MMJ will be on the road through Oct. 4 in Cleveland. The group will also stage its long-running One Big Holiday destination festival April 3-5, 2025, at Seascape Resort in Miramar Beach, Fl.
