The musician and songwriter has faced rumours about his sexual orientation throughout his career, but has previously refrained from speaking about the topic in public.
However, during a recent performance, he spoke directly to fans about how he identifies and said that he is just trying to “figure” it out for himself.
“There’s this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it so long,”, he said while on stage at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado (via Pedestrian). “[It’s] kind of silly, because I think sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing, and it’s so hard to just put into boxes.”
He then went on to describe how the speciation and rumours felt like “an intrusion” into something personal, before sharing his “real truth” with the crowd.
“The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone. And it feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that,” he explained. “I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to be a human and feel things. And that’s all I really want to say about that for now.”

Later during the performance, Mendes broke out a rendition of a currently unreleased song called ‘The Mountain’. The track contains lyrics about the topic too, which make a nod to how the public has speculated about his sexuality throughout his career.
“You can say I like girls or boys/ Whatever fits your mould,” he sings in the pre-chorus. “You can say I’m a fool/ You can say I’m a dreamer/ You can say I’m too far gonе/ But I feel never better’ So call it what you want.”
As highlighted by Pedestrian, the rumours surrounding the singer-songwriter come shortly after he was thought to be back with his on-again-off-again partner Camila Cabello.
In other Shawn Mendes news, the singer recently dedicated his unreleased track ‘Heart Of Gold’ to the late One Direction singer Liam Payne while on stage.
He also announced that he would be pushing back the release of his new album ‘Shawn’ from October 18 to November 15, in a bid to “bring some new inspiration and ideas to life”.
