Iggy Pop performs live in 2023

Iggy Pop has footage of his explosive live performance of ‘Modern Day Ripoff’ at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Watch it first on NME below.

Shared today (January 13), the new single marks the latest to be shared from the punk icon’s upcoming ‘Live At Montreux Jazz Festival’ album. Comprising his entire set from the 2023 edition of the festival, the 18-track record is set for release on Blu-ray, CD, 2LP gatefold vinyl, digital download and streaming on January 24 via earMUSIC. Pre-order/pre-save it here.

During the performance, Pop was accompanied by a seven-piece band and broke out a career-spanning set – including songs both from his solo catalogue and from his time with The Stooges. The set also came in anticipation of the release of his 19th and latest studio album, 2023’s ‘Every Loser’.

Now, NME can exclusively share the latest preview of the album: footage of Pop performing an intense live rendition of ‘Modern Day Ripoff’.

Pop broke out the ‘Every Loser’ track four songs into the setlist, following on from ‘Rune’, ‘Five Foot One’ and ‘T.V. Eye’. “‘Modern Day Ripoff’, baby!” he announces to the crowd before launching into the high-energy rendition. Watch it in full below.

The release of the ‘Live At Montreaux’ version of ‘Modern Day Ripoff’ marks the latest preview of the upcoming live album to be shared. Upon the LP first being announced back in October, Pop also shared a live version of ‘Five Foot One’ from the festival concert.

“I give something extra every time I do Montreux Jazz,” he said in a statement at the time. “In ’23 it was deep cuts like ‘Mass Production’, ‘Endless Sea’, ‘Five Foot One’ and a hell of a lot of sweat.”

An official description also described the forthcoming album as capturing the “most comprehensive live collection” from Pop, as he “continues to win over generations of new fans and perform at the highest level his lifelong devotees have come to expect.”

The new dates follow on from a run of live shows across summer 2024 too, including joining Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ Nick Zinner, Matt Sweeney to break out live renditions of Stooges tracks for the first time in over 10 years at California’s No Values Festival.

Before then, Pop spoke to NME about his legacy and impact on pop culture ahead of the release of his album ‘Every Loser‘. “I suppose if I was another person, I could sit down and graph all that out and come up with some sort of a schematic plan to capitalise a little bit more, but I’m not,” he said.

“I have noticed life has become a little easier and more rewarding in certain areas than it used to be and seems to continue that way, which really surprises me. Mostly I’m grateful there are people who’ve listened to the music and enjoy it.”

He went on to say: “It really surprises me. I always assumed there would be an arc and things would quiet down after I hit 65. That hasn’t been the case.”
