Liam Gallagher is building a pool in his North London mansion, despite previously admitting he “can’t swim”.
Per The Standard, the Oasis rocker had plans approved to build a high-security wall, gates, and a 24ft by 12ft pool in his Highgate home last September. Recently, construction workers have been spotted by a dug-out pit intended for the large pool.
Ongoing work on the pool comes despite his joking about his struggles to swim during his stint on Celebrity Gogglebox in 2017, where he appeared alongside his mother Peggy and son Gene.
“Me [and brothers Noel and Paul] can’t swim,” he said on the show, to which Gene replied: “You can swim, just not with your head up. You go underwater.”
“I can do half a width,” the ‘Wall of Glass’ singer reasoned. “I wish I could swim. I struggle when it goes deeper and that. That’s when I start flapping around like some mad salmon, like a crazy salmon and I’ve got to go back. I struggle having a shower.”
When Peggy revealed she swam fairly regularly, Gallagher responded: “Good for you. That’s grand. I’m jealous, man.”
His choice to have the pool built seems to mirror his brother Noel’s decision to splash out on a classic Jaguar, despite not being able to drive. Reflecting on the expensive mistake in a 2019 interview with Radio X, he said: “I thought when I became a fully blown rock star, I was gonna need a car.
“I’d heard about this firm that buy old vintage car chassis and put a modern car inside them. So I got a Mark 2 Jaguar from 1967, the year I was born. But they take about 18 months to two years to build, so I thought I’ll easily will have learned to drive in two years.”
He then managed to forget he bought the car until the 1967 MK2 Two-Door Drophead was delivered it to his door. After that, he also managed to “forget” about it for 25 years, as he never got his driver’s license.
Both brothers, meanwhile, are set to play some huge shows across the UK and Ireland this summer as part of their long-awaited reunion tour. Following the local gigs, the band will head overseas for a number of international dates.
So far, little is known about which members will be joining Liam and Noel for the massive gigs, although the frontman has been sharing hints about the setlists and the hopes for new material.
Liam also recently shared his love of the Sex Pistols, despite Glen Matlock describing Oasis as “boring”. “I remember when I first laid eyes on this record I thought it was the fucking Ouija board. Then I heard it and all heaven broke loose,” he wrote. “If you don’t own it go buy it NOW”.
