Kurt Cobain was a musician who cemented his status as one of the greatest rock stars as the frontman of Nirvana back in the ’90s and passed away in 1994, but his fans are still buying and selling locks of his hair over three decades later.
According to a post by Consequence on Wednesday, February 23, the strands of hair are set to be sold off during the “Punks, Monsters, Smut & Madmen: A Countercultural Cross-Section” auction by Potter & Potter Auctions. The description of the singer’s hair matches that of a similar sale that happened back in 2021. The previous time the hair was auctioned off, it was secured by the highest bidder for $14,145 and originally contained six strands of Cobain’s hair. The buyer presumably sold or decided to keep the remaining four, as the newest auction photo for the item clearly shows that only two strands remain.

The late songwriter’s hair is being sold alongside other music memorabilia, including GG Allin’s “Blood-Signed and Inscribed Personal Underwear” and items signed by members of the Dead Kennedys and the Ramones. There are also a number of items from the defunct New York City punk club CBGB, which closed down in 2006, that are being auctioned off.
According to the description of the item, Cobain’s hair was originally obtained in Birmingham, England, while Nirvana was on their Bleach tour in 1989 by his good friend, Tessa Osbourne.
The frontman was only 27 at the time of his passing and sported signature blonde locks for the majority of his career. He would routinely bleach them (and dye them different colors). He was found dead at his home in Seattle, Washington, on April 8, 1994. Investigators on the scene later reported that the guitarist had died on April 5, three days before he was found. The Seattle Police Department’s incident report stated that Cobain was found with a shotgun and suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The report also detailed that a suicide note was found close by and confirmed that his death was a suicide.
