Sports Team have shared the latest taste of their upcoming third album, in the form of ‘Maybe When We’re 30’ – check it out below.

The Cambridge indie band will release ‘Boys These Days’ on May 23 via Distiller Records/Bright Antenna, and you can pre-order/pre-save it here. They have previously shared the singles ‘I’m In Love (Subaru)’, ‘Condensation’ and ‘Bang Bang Bang’.

Now, they have returned with the reflective ‘Maybe When We’re 30’, a somewhat sardonic ode to the concept of settling down as you get older and seeing your social circles transform. Watch the video, directed by the band, here:

Explaining the inspiration for the song, the band’s lyricist Rob Knaggs has said: “It’s a song for Brooklyn Beckham. When you start off in a band you feel like Slurms Mackenzie (the Futurama party slug). You can’t believe it’s your job to travel around the world and drink beer and make music with your friends.”

“And then one morning you look around, and all your friends are getting married, and you think, maybe all I really want is to grow old, and get a dog, and write horrible things about Brooklyn Beckham on Facebook, and go on cruises, and have petty disputes with my neighbours about whether the council recycles cardboard.”

The band have also announced a series of in-store gigs to take place around the release of the album – tickets are on sale now and can be bought in participating stores or on the band’s site here.

Sports Team will play:

MAY
21 – Banquet, Kingston
22 – Assai at Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh
23 – Assai, Glasgow
24 – Live at Leeds signing
25 – Jacaranda Baltic, Liverpool
26 – Rough Trade, Nottingham
27 – Rough Trade, East London
28 – Resident, Brighton
29 – Rough Trade, Bristol

‘Boys These Days’ will be the follow-up to 2022’s ‘Gulp!’, which NME awarded four stars and noted was “a cocky, self-assured record that blends Sports Team’s chaotic energy with a smart, heartfelt understanding of the power of guitar music.”

“Through it all, Sports Team are just trying to have a good time. It’s a relatable sentiment given these times, and whether it’s the escapism of the live show or their communal spirit, ‘Gulp!’ sees the band continue to build something to believe in.”

They will also play at the BBC 6 Music Festival next month, as well as at Live At Leeds and Truck Festival, and will open for Supergrass in Halifax in August.
