Lady Gaga brought down the proverbial house last night (March 8) while both hosting and serving as the musical guest on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, as she dazzled with heavily choreographed performances of “Abracadabra” and “Killah” from her new album MAYHEM and appeared in several music-minded sketches.
Gaga set a playful tone during her monologue, referencing the critical beating given to her latest movie, Joker: Folie à Deux. “I select films that would showcase my craft as a serious actor — films such as Joker 2. Apparently, people thought it was awesome,” she said. “Joaquin [Phoenix] and I even got nominated for a Razzie, which is an award for the worst films of the year. So, we won worst onscreen duo. But, joke’s on them. I love winning things. My Razzie brings me one step closer to an EGORT. It’s like an EGOT, but it’s hurtful.”

In a nod to the wave of new, young artists dominating the charts, she joked, “The last time I hosted SNL, I was 27. I’m 38 now, which is scientifically the best age for a female pop star to be. I see that most pop stars are over 40. Chappell Roan is 58. Charli xcx, she’s 75. Tate McRae is my biological grandmother.”
Sketch highlights included a first date-themed bit with Bowen Yang featuring a parody of Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight” and another Gaga/Yang team-up on a song advocating for the abolition of the omnipresent, highly irritating slang term “slay.” Gaga also got the chance to don a 1920s-style flapper outfit and dance around in a sketch involving insensitive staff at a funeral home.
