Dropkick Murphys frontman Ken Casey has spoken about his confrontation with a MAGA hat-wearing fan at a recent show in Boston.

The punk band were playing at the MGM Music Hall last Sunday (March 16) for St. Patrick’s Day weekend when Casey called out an individual in the crowd who was waving his Make America Great Again hat.

“If you’re in a room full of people and you want to know who’s in a cult…They been holding up a fucking hat the whole night to represent a president,” he said from the stage. “This is America! There’s no kings here!”

He continued: “Do you mind sir, we’re going to play a song about our grandparents and people who fought Nazis in the war…so if you could just shut the fuck up for five minutes.”

Now, Casey has addressed the interaction on the MeidasTouch podcast, stressing that it was not his intention to “berate” his fans. “I’m really not looking to stop the show and turn it into a political rally,” he said. “But you know I do have to call out the hypocrisy when I see it, especially if it’s being put in my face.”

In the same interview, Casey turns his guns on Donald Trump’s close ally Elon Musk. “He literally seems like a villain from a movie mixed with a guy that’s like mid-nervous breakdown, and Donald Trump’s just a clown,” he said. He went on to assert that he believes Trump is a “Russian asset”.

At another recent show in Clearwater, Florida, Casey had another exchange with a Trump supporter. The fan was wearing a MAGA t-shirt and Casey bet him that it was manufactured outside the US.

“If you lose the bet, we switch shirts, OK? If you win the bet, I give you $100 and the shirt,” Casey told the audience member. A stagehand checked the shirt’s label and the fan shouted: “Nicaragua!”

Dropkick Murphys recently played a run of UK shows in February. Their most recent studio album was ’Okemah Rising’ in 2023.
