John Boyega asked JJ Abrams for some growth for his Star Wars character Finn, who was “doing a lot of falling.”
Boyega starred in three Star Wars outings, films The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019) – with the first and last of the sequel trilogy being directed by Abrams.
When Abrams returned to direct The Rise of Skywalker, Boyega had one request – Finn needed more character growth. Speaking on his panel at Emerald City Comic Con earlier this month, he said: “I was doing a lot of falling in Star Wars. I was always falling. Come on guys, be honest with me. You know I was always falling. So, I was like to J.J., ‘Can I be on my feet a little bit longer?’”
The actor also wanted Finn to have more winning moments, according to Popverse. He said: “There was a level of growth from The Last Jedi to The Rise of Skywalker that me and J.J. had spoke about adding. I was like to J.J., ‘I’m sick and tired of eating dirt J.J., I know how to move. My lightsaber skills are undeniable. Get me out there on the field.’
“I remember J.J. coming up to me and saying, ‘John, we’ve got you, we’ve got Poe, we’ve got Chewbacca running through the corridors, taking out these stormtroopers.’ And that’s when I said, ‘Yeah, that’s enough.’ That was a nice moment and something for me to revel in.”

NME awarded The Rise Of Skywalker three stars on its release in 2019, writing: “Most who watch this film will have an enjoyable time. It’s exciting, surprisingly funny – special mention to C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), who nails zinger after zinger in a standout turn – and is stuffed with strong performances from its leading cast, especially John Boyega as Stormtrooper-turned-rebel Finn.”
“Nearly all the unanswered questions are resolved and Skywalker feels sufficiently satisfying as a final chapter. It’s taken 42 years to get here, but (for now) the circle is finally complete.”
In other Star Wars-related news, last month the first trailer for season two of Star Wars series Andor is out now, ahead of its UK release on April 23. With the first season of Andor being set five years before the events of Rogue One, the timeline is moving closer – and from the clip, it looks as though there’s going to be plenty of action in store in the new season.
