āL.A. Witch exude an aura of effortless cool, whether itās manifested as the Americana noir and laconic back-to-basics rock n roll of their self-titled debut or the austere adventurism of their sophomore album āPlay With Fireā.
Their new single āIcicleā sees them journeying out of the proto-punk, psychedelia and gritty riffs of the 70s into the chorus-drenched guitars and forlorn minimalism of Joy Division and early The Cure. A fusion of smooth and smoky garage alchemy with a newfound utilisation of post-punkās disciplined reserve and icy instrumentation.
āIcicle / Wonāt you cleanse my soul / Youāre sharp and cold / Purity, come make me bleedā, Sanchez murmurs, her voice detached over new wave-inflected instrumentation.
āI wrote āIcicleā during a really dark timeā, Sanchez explains. āThe icicle represents both a knife and a crystal ā something that cuts but also purifiesā. The songās hypnotic detachment is intentional, her monotone delivery inspired by Ian Curtis.
