While performing at the indie festival at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, Thomas Mars and co. brought out Koenig towards the end of their set as a surprise guest. The French frontman noted that the band is currently recording a new album but might not return to the U.S. for “another few years, maybe less”.
Mars then went on to say: “Now that I’ve bummed you out, there’s some cheering up coming so you’ll see.” Koeing then came out to perform ‘Tonight’ their collab from Phoenix’s latest album ‘Alpha Zulu‘. The Vampire Weekend frontman then brought out his guitar and joined in on the band’s 2009 classic hit ‘1901’ and their final song of the night ‘Identical (Reprise)’.
Last month, Mars joined Vampire Weekend during their special gig to mark the recent total solar eclipse. They performed ‘Tonight’, marking the first time the pair have performed the song live together.
In a four-star review of Phoenix’s ‘Alpha Zulu’, NME shared: “‘Alpha Zulu’, then, refuses to stand on ceremony with their surroundings; they appreciate the scale, but never abandon their character. It’s like wandering the halls of the band’s own personal gallery, a stroll through time, and a chance to see some of their most glistening pieces yet up close.
In other news, Phoenix are set to perform at this year’s edition of All Points East and Primavera Sound.
As for Vampire Weekend, the group recently performed ‘Gen-X Cops’ and ‘Capricorn’ while appearing as the musical guests on Saturday Night Live.
They are due to hit the road for their 2024 UK and Ireland tour later this year. You can buy any remaining tickets here.
