When Jelly Roll appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday (June 12), he opened up about his previous arrests — and shared a funny story in connection to one of those arrests.

“You must have been the worst drug dealer because you were busted like 47 times,” Stern told Jelly Roll during one clip from the interview.

“So bad,” Jelly Roll replied. “I was the worst criminal ever.”

“How did you get caught so much?” Stern asked, to which Jelly Roll responded, “My successfulness of running from the police is zero and 20. But I was probably 15 years old and I got arrested once and I was on a Xanax bar, Howard — never told this story, but you know how Xanax make you a little slow anyways? And in my mind, when the police pulled us over, I was like, ‘I’m just gonna run.’ So I opened the door, and in my mind, I jumped out and sprinted across a field and almost made it. I was so fat and Xanaxed out, I stood out and got two steps.”

Laughing, Jelly Roll continued, “The cop was standing there watching me, and I fell. And he finally, he just laid on top of me. He felt so bad for me, he didn’t even charge me for trying to run.”

These days, of course, Jelly Roll has traded arrests for chart-topping hits, sold-out headlining concerts and being a lead performer on festival stages, including his recent show at Nissan Stadium as part of CMA Fest in downtown Nashville. Jelly Roll just earned his fourth consecutive No. 1 Country Airplay hit with “Halfway to Hell,” and just released “I Am Not Okay,” which is the first single from his upcoming album. He also has a slate of headlining shows on his Beautifully Broken Tour, beginning Aug. 27 and running through October.
