The South African amapiano star appeared at the ceremony to accept the awards for Best New Artist and Best International Act. There, she also sang her hit single ‘Jump’ alongside Georgia rapper Gunna and Jamaican DJ/rapper Skillibeng.
Her performance also featured a giant tiger formed by a group of dancers, a nod to her fanbase which are collectively known as ‘Tygers’.
It is the first performance she’s given since announcing the cancellation of her world tour in March citing an unspecified injury. The singer said she hoped to be touring by the summer – and by the looks of things, she’s well onto the road to recovery.

Tyla’s self-titled debut album was one of NME‘s best albums of the year so far, with NME writing in a four-star review: “It is clear we are witnessing the start of something special. While Tyla’s parents may have hoped she grow out of her ambition to be an artist, she never did: “I’m very determined,” she previously told us. “If I want something, I make sure I get it.”
“Through sheer faith and tenacity, Tyla anoints herself as South Africa’s brightest new star, reinforcing that amapiano was never a ‘moment’ – and only ever a true movement.”
We spoke to the star in March last year, where she discussed of the importance of bringing African artists more attention. “I just feel like everything is so new and everyone is different, but we have a vibe that comes with us. Like Amapiano, it’s a whole genre we created back home in South Africa and it has dance moves: it’s a whole movement. We’ve been partying with it by ourselves, but now other people are enjoying it and I’m loving that. I love that people are seeing a different side of Africa. People are seeing it for what it is, and the artistry and creativity that we have.”
