Per a press release, the dark, brutal track “captures the intoxicating energy of the band’s live show”. Frontman Joe Love barks in the crescendo: “You better wither baby before you die/ The whole team withers/ The whole team dies.”

‘Wither’ is accompanied by a ’90s video game-inspired music video, directed by Ryan Vautier. It references Chris Hughes (keys/synth) and Morgan Wallace’s (sax/keys) on-stage dance to ‘Wither’.

The gameplay-esque visuals also see Fat Dog’s members enter different worlds, and come across bone dealers and singing skulls before joining forces to fight the final boss, Gerald.

Explaining the concept of the video, Vautier said: “I wanted it to feel like a real PS1 or 2 game that I would have played when I was a kid – Fat Dog’s music has the chaotic energy me and my brother had, smashing down soft drinks and arguing over who got the top split screen.”

‘Wither’ follows on from Fat Dog’s 2024 singles ‘Running’, ‘I Am The King’ and ‘All The Same’ and 2023’s ‘King Of The Slugs’ – all of which will feature on ‘Woof’.

The record was co-produced by Love, James Ford (Arctic MonkeysGeeseHaimGorillazKylie MinogueDeclan Mckenna) and Jimmy Robertson. The band have cited Bicep, I.R.O.K, Kamasi Washington and Russian EDM outfit Little Big as influences.

Speaking to NME for a Cover interview in April, Hughes explained: “What we’ve got as a band is special. I hear things from my friends who are in other groups, and there just seems to be constant animosity elsewhere.

“We get these moments where everything lines up: sometimes, we all look at each other on stage, and quietly recognise that we’re playing a really good gig. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Fat Dog will perform at Latitude 2024 next week before embarking on a UK and Ireland headline tour in November (find tickets here). Last month saw the band play numerous sets at Glastonbury Festival.

The group are scheduled to tour in North America this autumn – find any remaining tickets here.
