Some Hollywood parents share every milestone on social media — Scarlett Johansson is not one of them.
While chatting with InStyle in an interview published Tuesday, March 11, the 40-year-old award-winning actress opened up about why she keeps her kids out of the spotlight.

“The anonymity of my children is very precious to me,” Johansson — who shares daughter Rose, 10, with ex-husband Romain Dauriac and son Cosmo, 3, with husband Colin Jost — told the outlet. “I was talking to my daughter the other day, because she said, ‘Oh, I would love to make videos for The Outset.’ She was like, ‘Why can’t I?’ And I said, ‘Well, other than the fact that you’re 10…’” (The Outset is a skincare brand founded by Johansson and Kate Foster.)

Although the Marvel icon made her film debut at just 9 years old, she wants her kids to decide for themselves if — and when — they step into the Hollywood scene. She explained that once fame is out there, there’s no undoing it.
“The thing about being a public figure is that the idea of being recognizable and celebrated feels fun, but then you can never stuff it back in the bottle,” Johansson said. “The reality of it is, there’s a massive loss to that, you know? So I think preserving that for as long as possible until it’s someone’s choice, that’s the choice I make as far as my kids go.”
In addition to keeping her kids out of the public eye, the Black Widow star has also been private about her relationships.
Johansson and Jost, 42, first crossed paths in 2006 when the mom of two hosted Saturday Night Live and the comedian was a writer on the show. More than a decade later, they reconnected and began dating in 2017 before tying the knot in October 2020.
