A new documentary is set to explore the possibility that the late Doors frontman Jim Morrison is still alive.

The rock icon was found dead in the bathtub of his apartment in Paris by his girlfriend Pamela Courson on July 3, 1971. He was 27 years old at the time, with the official cause of death listed as heart failure.

Nevertheless, conspiracy theories have long persisted that suggest he may have faked his own death after becoming disillusioned with the fame and attention his success had brought him.

That will be the subject of Before The End, a new documentary created by Doors superfan Jeff Finn. It will examine the “evidence” of the theories that Morrison may still be alive, including one revolving around a man named ‘Frank X’, who works in maintenance in Syracuse, New York, but who some believe is Morrison in disguise.

Frank was photographed with Doors drummer John Densmore in 2013 and has been noted to share physical similarities with Morrison. It is also believed that he has revealed in the past that he shares many interests with Morrison, including the work of French poet Charles Baudelaire.

One reason that speculation has grown about Morrison’s death is that there was no autopsy conducted on his body. French law did not require one to take place unless foul play was suspected, which it was not.

Last year, The Libertines revealed they had bought the bathtub in which he was found and have placed it in their Margate hotel The Albion Rooms.

Pete Doherty explained: “There’s a fellow who my wife’s cousin knows, and his cousin was basically the landlord. And he’s not interested in music, and even less interested in music mythology, and so he’s just been going on about this bathtub which people have been trying to buy off him.

“He doesn’t want it. He thinks it’s morbid to make money off it. So I said, ‘Well, we’ll take it for the hotel’.”

In other Doors news, the building featured on the cover of their 1970 album ‘Morrison Hotel’ was badly damaged by a fire in downtown Los Angeles in December.

The rights to the band’s publishing catalogue, master recordings, trademarks and merchandising options were sold to Primary Wave Music last year in what was described as a “monumental acquisition”.
