âL.A. Witch exude an aura of effortless cool, whether itâs manifested as the Americana noir and laconic back-to-basics rock n roll of their self-titled debut or the austere adventurism of their sophomore album âPlay With Fireâ.
Their new single âIcicleâ sees them journeying out of the proto-punk, psychedelia and gritty riffs of the 70s into the chorus-drenched guitars and forlorn minimalism of Joy Division and early The Cure. A fusion of smooth and smoky garage alchemy with a newfound utilisation of post-punkâs disciplined reserve and icy instrumentation.
âIcicle / Wonât you cleanse my soul / Youâre sharp and cold / Purity, come make me bleedâ, Sanchez murmurs, her voice detached over new wave-inflected instrumentation.
âI wrote âIcicleâ during a really dark timeâ, Sanchez explains. âThe icicle represents both a knife and a crystal â something that cuts but also purifiesâ. The songâs hypnotic detachment is intentional, her monotone delivery inspired by Ian Curtis.
